Men in the UK may be able to get Viagra without a prescription, a pharmacist and a GP.
A pharmacist told the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) last month that men with erectile dysfunction (ED) who are taking prescription drugs should talk to their GP or pharmacist about a new way they can get the drugs they need without getting a prescription.
The advice came as the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) has approved online pharmacies to sell Viagra in the UK, and as erectile dysfunction (ED) is a health condition that can affect many people with the condition.
Viagra works by increasing blood flow to the penis, which can help men with ED achieve and maintain an erection. It can also help men with low blood pressure or high blood pressure to get the drugs they need without having to take the medication.
A pharmacist from the National Pharmacy Association (NPA) said men should not take Viagra to treat erectile dysfunction, as it may not work for them.
It is also important that men not take the medication if they have severe heart or liver problems, low blood pressure, glaucoma (a high pressure in the eye), a personal injury or property liability claim or if they have recently had a stroke or heart attack.
NICE has previously advised men not to take Viagra because the drug can cause an allergic reaction. It is not known whether the drug is also effective in people with diabetes or high blood pressure.
The advice came from the MHRA’s Office of National Formulary, which also said it would only issue men who meet the criteria to get the drug.
The NPA said it is working with the pharmacist to make sure men are given the appropriate formulary for the treatment they are seeking.
“Healthcare professionals are encouraged to work closely with a pharmacist to make sure men are given a formulary to help them take the right treatment for the right condition.”
The MHRA said the advice about online pharmacies should also be part of the National Health and Medical Boards’ ‘Who, What, When’s It Not in Force?’ scheme.
